Garage Gym Conversion in Simpsonville SC
This active family of four needed a garage that better fit their lifestyle. Through our design-build process, our team totally transformed this garage into a functional flex space they use every single day.
The Problem: A Garage That Just Wasn't Working
When our clients bought the home in 2025, most of it had already been updated. But the modern finishes inside did not match what was happening out in the garage. Original to this 1990s home, it still had the classic, dark wood paneling that made it feel dark, cramped, and dated.
While it was serving many purposes, it certainly wasn’t serving them well. As a gym, it was always blazing hot or freezing cold. As storage space, it featured surprisingly little cabinetry. As a mudroom, it offered no drop zone for shoes and jackets. Our homeowners were ready to check one last item off their list and update this garage!
Designing a Garage with “Zones”
Everyone always focuses on the aesthetic upgrades, but our team even designed the layout of this space intentionally, with several zones in mind. The door leading inside is surrounded by cabinetry built for grab-and-go items. Tool storage is to the left, keeping everything organized and contained. The enclosed utility room becomes the laundry, so that its previous location inside can become a butler's pantry. Let’s take a look at this design brought to life!
Building a Garage Gym That Fits Your Life
Our clients were most excited to turn this space into a functional home gym where they could set up their equipment and actually enjoy their daily workouts. To create the ideal home gym, we demoed the paneling, insulated the walls, put up drywall, and installed a mini-split. This unit is inconspicuous but heats or cools the entire space in minutes – the key to a pleasant workout! Added lighting and durable epoxy floors create the complete experience.
Epoxy Floors: Great for Garages
Epoxy has become a popular flooring finish for luxury garages. It is extremely practical, offering complete waterproofing without the grout lines of tile. Decorative flakes, metallic effects, dyes, glitter, or sand can be added to achieve a variety of styles and textures. There are also UV-resistant sealants that can be applied as a topcoat. This particular project features a granite look made with textured acrylic flakes and a high-performance topcoat, plus it's backed by a lifetime warranty.
Custom Garage Storage
Our client’s second goal was to get better storage in their garage. We added custom cabinetry at the back of the garage to create a convenient drop zone where the kids can leave backpacks, shoes, and sports gear after school or practice. A dedicated tool storage wall keeps everything from drills and leaf blowers to screws and hardware organized and easy to find. Even the bikes get their own dedicated space in a rack on the wall!
Adding a True Butler’s Pantry
With kids and dogs in the home, pantry storage was a must. However, this kitchen didn’t have a pantry at all! Another goal of this project was to move the laundry room to the garage so that this space could be repurposed as a butler’s pantry! It feels like an extension of the kitchen, with an entire wall of cabinetry and stunning Café butcher block countertops. In addition to food storage, the pantry houses all the small kitchen appliances like the toaster, blender, and coffee maker, freeing up valuable countertop space in the kitchen.
