When they shared inspiration images of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired designs, we knew this would be a fun project!
Who is Frank Lloyd Wright?
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) was a renowned American architect who developed organic architecture, which incorporates the structure’s natural environment into the design. One of his most famous homes, Fallingwater, for example, was designed around and built on top of a waterfall. He also famously designed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City’s famous art museum. Greenville, SC has its own Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, located in the North Main area.
Designing a Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Carport
Low-pitched, cantilevered roofs with deep overhangs characterize Wright’s style. Our design team pulled from these elements of his signature style to achieve the classic “Frank Lloyd Wright” appearance. Wright also loved geometric designs – especially repeated squares and rectangles – so we incorporated a rectangular Board-and-Batten ceiling treatment. We mimicked wood textures in his designs with fiber-cement siding that will stand the test of time.
Working Through Carport Design Options
During the design phase, we worked through multiple carport options with the homeowners, presenting various options for the custom carport design. Our iterative Planning Process allows us to explore multiple options, refine the design, and ensure every detail works before construction begins. In this case, it was important to scale the carport appropriately to the existing home, so it did not overpower it.
Building a Frank Lloyd Wright–Style Carport
Our production team did a beautiful job bringing the design to life! While the finished carport appears simple, achieving its clean architectural lines required a high level of precision throughout construction. Every detail was carefully executed to preserve the home's Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired aesthetic. Once construction started wrapping up, our clients installed a new stone driveway and lush landscaping—the icing on the cake!
