Historic Kitchen Remodel in North Main

A Kitchen with History

This home is nestled in the historic North Main neighborhood of Greenville, SC. While this home was officially built in the ‘60s, its kitchen likely dates back to the 1920s! It’s been in our homeowner’s family for generations, and they shared that the home was originally located down the street, and was moved to its current location. With many years of memories (and lots of wear and tear), it was time for this kitchen to get some TLC!

Designing a Solution

These homeowners were starved for storage in this kitchen. The original upper cabinets only went halfway to the ceiling, missing a key opportunity for additional storage! In a small space like this, intentional cabinetry layout is key. Our Design Team strategized and developed a design that solved the problem. By removing a window, extending cabinetry to the ceiling, and adding a whole wall of pantry cabinets, we Maximized Storage Space!

Challenges of Remodeling a Historic Home

One challenge of this project was matching products that are less common in today’s market. We removed an old AC unit that was installed through the wall. This left a hole that had to be patched, but the exterior block used for the original exterior was difficult to match. We worked with an out-of-state vendor to get a block with the right profile and achieve a seamless finish on the outside!

Another challenge was the significant termite damage we found in the wall framing. As we dug in deeper, we discovered they had damaged the floor system as well. Our team cut out the affected areas and added a structural beam under the house for additional support where necessary. Repairs like this do affect timelines, but we made adjustments as we worked to keep the project on track.

Preserving Character in Historic Home Renovations

When remodeling historic homes, it’s important to not to lose the history and character of the original home. Here are two ways we kept the charm of this 20s kitchen!

  • Keeping paneled walls allowed us to preserve the texture and look of this historic kitchen. It had to be carefully removed and reinstalled so that we could run new electrical and repair the framing behind it.

  • Simple white cabinets, classic finishes, and original hardwoods work together to give a fresh but familiar look that still fits with the rest of the home.

Lasting Impact

This North Main remodel goes to show that new cabinetry and finishes can make a big impact. This kitchen will keep serving this family for another 75 years, thanks to these updates. Our clients are overjoyed with the result, and left a glowing 5-star review for us!

“Ferguson just completed a complete kitchen renovation for us. We couldn't be more pleased with the finished product. Every team member was very patient with us during the design process and during the installation. Every commitment they made was fulfilled!” - CK
