Fireplace Refacing Ideas
Why Refinish Your Fireplace?
Before starting your fireplace refacing project, it is important to know what your goals are. Are you switching from wood-burning to gas? Do you want a more modern or traditional style? Are there any structural or layout challenges within the space? The fireplace is typically the focal point of a room, so it should enhance the beauty and character of your home!
Discovering Your Style
Understanding the “why” behind your fireplace remodel, will help you as you explore all the aesthetic possibilities. For example, if your goal is to modernize your fireplace, removing the hearth and adding a bold, black surround could be an option. Ornate details like corbels lean more traditional, while finishes like limewash offer a farmhouse charm. Explore styles and materials to find what you like!
Fireplace Codes
Building codes will play a crucial part in certain decisions. For example, a wood-burning fireplace requires a hearth to protect your home from flying sparks. Mantles are often recommended for wood-burning fireplaces to prevent damage to items placed above, such as a TV or artwork. Additionally, any materials used must be rated to withstand the heat generated by the fireplace.
Questions to Consider
- What is your goal for refacing your fireplace?
- Do you want a gas or wood-burning fireplace?
- Will your fireplace require a mantle?
- Do you prefer a raised hearth or a flush hearth design?
- What are the dimensions of the fireplace?
- What materials and finishes do you prefer?

Fireplace Surround Ideas
Rustic
This rustic fireplace design is simple and classic. The original wood-burning stove is accented by a floating faux box beam mantle and full-width hearth. The brick surround adds texture to the space.
Modern Transitional
This gas fireplace originally had a brown tile hearth with a white trim surround. To update it, we switched to a black marble tile surround. In this Lake House Remodel with natural wood grains and leather textures, the fireplace tile surround can be categorized as Modern Transitional.
Modern Glam
This fireplace off our Luxury Kitchen Remodel is a two-sided gas fireplace, meaning it can be enjoyed from the living room or while sitting on the back porch! We removed the original poplar wood framing and raised brick hearth, replacing it with a build-out and floating stained wood mantle. The painted plaster, floating mantle, and flush stone hearth offer clean lines and a modern look.
Traditional Freestanding Exterior
This traditional fireplace makes this outdoor space feel elevated and cohesive. Nothing brings people together like an outdoor wood-burning fire for smores and late-night conversations! This unique backyard feature is solid brick with custom masonry details and a raised hearth.
Why Hire a Specialist
Refacing a fireplace involves several technical steps. Whether you are removing stone in the demo phase or transitioning from wood-burning to gas, major structural changes require a specialist. If you are changing the firebox, the surrounding structure must be able to support it. Combustible materials must be offset from the firebox by distances dictated by residential code. You should also check to ensure your home is properly ventilated and has adequate air supply while the fire is burning.
